COSTA MESA, Calif. — Hawai'i Pacific split a doubleheader with Westmont on Monday, dropping a tightly contested opener before bouncing back in dominant fashion with a 13-1 win in game two.
Game one was a pitcher's duel, as Rylen Bayne delivered a complete-game effort, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out seven. The lone run came in the fourth inning, as Westmont capitalized on a sacrifice RBI to take a 1-0 lead.
The Sharks put together five hits but were unable to push a run across, leaving multiple runners on base in the narrow loss.
Hawai'i Pacific responded in a big way in game two, exploding offensively behind four home runs and a 16-hit performance.
The Sharks broke things open early in the second inning, as Ziah Chang launched a two-run homer before Noah Hata followed with a three-run shot to give HPU a quick 5-0 lead. The momentum continued in the fourth, with Tyler Arnold, Blake Helsper, and Brock Wirthgen each driving in runs to extend the lead.
Arnold added another home run in the sixth, while Ethan Murakoshi capped the scoring with a three-run blast later in the inning.
Hata led the way with three hits and three RBIs, while Arnold also drove in three runs and scored twice. The Sharks showcased depth throughout the lineup, recording 16 hits and 13 RBIs in the win.
On the mound, Jacob Vanek earned the win in relief, combining with the pitching staff to limit Westmont to just one run.
With the split, Hawai'i Pacific moves to 24-19 on the season.
