Czech-Mate, FPU!

Las Vegas, NV (March 17, 2011) – In the final matches of a brutal road trip, Hawai'i Pacific and Fresno Pacific met in both men's and women's tennis. HPU won the women's matchup 7-2, while the men lost 5-1.

What a difference a year made for the lady Sea Warriors. Almost a year to the day, HPU lost to FPU 8-1, and FPU went on to win the NAIA National Championship. This year, the Sea Warriors had their way. In an unusual match where singles were played first, HPU went unchallenged.

The Sea Warriors led 4-2 after singles and needed just one doubles point to get the win. They got all three. HPU's doubles were particularly strong on the trip, and the new duo at third doubles of Sandra Wikstrom and Carrie Shuler were no exception winning 8-6.

Seventh-ranked Czech native Zora Vlckova who is suffering from a leg injury, fell in the first set of singles play  with 1-6. Then, in a total reversal of fortunes, Vlckova won the second and third sets 6-1, 6-1. Florie Paquay spared the drama and dispatched of her opponent in straight sets winning 6-1, 6-1.

 The men's team was once again led by Czech native Petr Michnev who scored a solid win at first singles over Kirill Sinitsyn 6-2, 5-7, 10-6. The loss for Sinitsyn was his first of the season against a Division II opponent. The rest of the men's team suffered setbacks and with HPU trailing 5-1 and , thus, no chance of victory, the doubles matches were not played.

The men's team next  plays the Air Force Academy on March 21st at CORP at 3:00 PM. The women will host UH-Hilo on March 23rd at CORP, starting at 3:30 PM.
