Another Sweep for HPU Baseball

March 20, 2011 (San Francisco, CA) – Two days after sweeping Grand Canyon, the Hawai'i Pacific baseball team swept Academy of Art on the road. HPU took game one 8-6 and game two 3-1. The Sea Warriors are now 11-13 overall and 9-5 in PacWest play.

Game one saw the Sea Warriors put three runs on the board in the second inning, giving them a 3-0 lead, a lead they would not surrender. Jordan Inamasu and Jordan Oshiro both had RBI in the second inning. The game was uneventful until late; with HPU up 5-2 in the eighth inning AAU scored two runs to make it a one run game. HPU bounced right back, putting three runs on the board in the top of the ninth inning. AAU responded with two runs in the bottom of the ninth but it was not enough.

Team pitching ace Michael Greene work eight innings allowing just three earned runs, the PacWest Preseason Pitcher of the Year worked out of trouble all afternoon. Cory Yuh was again called upon to close the game, picking up his third save in the last three games. Jordan Inamasu and Wade Tamaru each had three hits and a RBI. Oshiro added two RBI.

In game two, offense was hard to come by as the teams combined for nine hits, two of them of the extra base variety. HPU never trailed, scratching out a run in the third inning to get the lead. The game would remain 1-0 until the sixth inning, when with a man on Keanu Kapana hit a 1-0 pitch over the fence in left field for his first homer of his HPU career. AAU would get a run in the bottom of the seventh but it too late.

After pitching primarily in relief this season, Peter Ibanez got the start and the win, surrendering just four hits and one run in seven innings of work. Rylan Morihara had a RBI for HPU.

The two teams will play another doubleheader tomorrow starting at 12:00 PM PST.
