Honolulu, HI (March 5, 2011) – Despite a spectacular performance by Mana Hopkins, who scored 21 points on 10-17 shooting, Hawai'i Pacific lost to Grand Canyon 72-65 at McCabe Gym. HPU closes the season with a record of 18-7 and 12-4 in conference play.
After a close start to the game, HPU used a 12-0 run to lead 24-13 with under 10 minutes to play in the first half. The run featured three straight baskets by Hopkins. GCU responded by reducing the lead to one at the half.
HPU went cold to start the second half, and went down 64-48 with 6:17 left to play. The Sea Warriors answered with a 10-0 run to trail by five with a minute remaining, but could not complete the comeback.
Jazzmin Awa-Williams scored 10 points in her final game as a Sea Warrior, as freshman Skye Savini scored nine. Mikela Thoemmes led the team with seven rebounds, Savini led with five assists.
Grand Canyon wins the PacWest with a record of 27-2, 15-1, Samantha Murphy led GCU with 23 points.
