HONOLULU — Hawai'i Pacific closed strong Saturday afternoon, outscoring Fresno Pacific 45-32 in the second half to secure a 77-69 PacWest victory.
After trailing 37-32 at halftime, the Sharks flipped the script in the third quarter, shooting 46 percent from the field and holding Fresno Pacific to just 15 points. HPU then sealed the win with a 25-point fourth quarter behind aggressive free-throw shooting and timely stops.
Kyra Tanabe delivered a dominant performance, pouring in 31 points while going 15-of-16 from the free throw line. The junior added six rebounds and controlled the tempo throughout the second half.
Mya Hatchett added 18 points and seven rebounds, converting 12-of-14 from the line. The Sharks capitalized at the stripe all afternoon, finishing 30-of-36 as a team, including 11 fourth-quarter free throws to close it out.
Alana Roberts and Lucia Ricci each pulled down seven rebounds to help HPU compete on the glass, while Kalysa Ng provided a spark with six points and four assists.
Despite shooting just 35 percent from the field, Hawai'i Pacific forced 17 Fresno Pacific turnovers and turned them into 21 points. The Sharks also pushed the pace for 16 fast-break points.
Fresno Pacific was led by Nina Wisniewski's 22 points, but the Sunbirds shot just 27 percent from the field and 20 percent from beyond the arc.
With the win, HPU improves to 8-16 overall and 7-11 in PacWest play as the Sharks continue their push toward the final stretch of conference competition.
