SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Hawai'i Pacific competed tough for four quarters but fell to Point Loma, 66-53, Wednesday evening inside Golden Gymnasium in PacWest play.
The Sharks (9-17, 8-13 PacWest) shot an efficient 44.2 percent from the field and 42.1 percent from three, turning in strong offensive stretches throughout the contest. After trailing by just one at the end of the first quarter, HPU stayed within striking distance behind a strong second quarter where it shot 58.3 percent from the floor.
Kyra Tanabe led the way with 14 points, knocking down two three-pointers and finishing a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Jalen Samuel added 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting, including two triples, while Mya Hatchett contributed nine points, three assists and three rebounds in 31 minutes.
HPU showed balanced production across the lineup, with Kyla Hopton adding six points and four rebounds, and Lucia Ricci pulling down four boards while shooting 2-of-3 from the floor. The Sharks received 16 points from the bench and converted 87.5 percent of their free throw attempts.
Point Loma (20-7, 16-5 PacWest) found momentum in the third quarter, shooting over 64 percent in the period to create separation. The Sea Lions capitalized on second-chance opportunities and inside scoring, finishing with 44 points in the paint.
Despite the final margin, HPU remained competitive throughout, shooting over 50 percent in both the second and third quarters and continuing to execute offensively against one of the conference's top teams.
The Sharks will look to carry that offensive efficiency and momentum into their next PacWest matchup.
