Amaral Returns, Leads HPU to Victory

Waipahu, HI (April 6, 2011) – Hawai'i Pacific split tonight's doubleheader with Dixie State, the teams remain separated by just a game at the top of the PacWest baseball standings. After missing HPU's previous 13 games due to injury, Blake Amaral was back in the lineup as the designated hitter and went 2-3 with a double, homerun, three runs scored and three runs driven in.  HPU was victorious in game one 9-3, and lost game two 7-5 in 11 innings.

Game one starter Michael Greene flirted with a no-hitter, through six innings the Red Storm was held hitless. Dixie State scored twice in the seventh inning, but it was too late as HPU started the seventh with a 9-0 lead. The Sea Warriors got all of their runs in the first four innings, highlighted by three runs each in the first and second innings.

Overall, Greene went seven innings and did not allow an earned run while giving up three hits and striking out three. The win is Greene's fourth, which leads HPU. Les Akeo, Kale Sumner, Troy Ajer and Lanan Rice-Kashima all each had two hits. Keanu Kapana and Sumner also each had two RBI.

Although game two was scheduled to be a seven inning game, it took 11 to decide a winner. Amaral put HPU up early with a triple to score Akeo in the first inning. Dixie State would strike back to score five in the third. Fueled by RBI from Jordan Inamasu, Rylan Morihara and two by Wade Tamaru, HPU tied the game in the fourth. After that, the bats on both sides fell silent; six scoreless innings would pass before Dixie State would win the game in the 11th. HPU had a golden opportunity in the sixth inning, loading the bases with no outs, but could not cash in.

Morihara and Amaral each had two hits to pace the Sea Warriors. Starter Toby Inouye pitched seven and a third innings giving up five runs, but none of them were earned. Cory Yuh came on in relief and got the loss.

HPU is now 14-15 overall and 11-7 in the PacWest and Dixie State moves to 19-11, 16-6. The teams will finish the season series tomorrow in a doubleheader starting at 4:00 PM at Hans L'Orange Field.
