Waipahu, HI (April 7, 2011) – After taking both ends of a doubleheader against Dixie State, Hawai'i Pacific moved within 17 percentage points of first place. HPU took the first game by a score of 4-2 and got a shutout from Peter Ibanez in game two, winning 3-0.
The Sea Warriors are 16-15 overall and 13-7 in the PacWest, Dixie State is now 20-12 and 16-8. HPU has a game advantage in the loss column with 12 conference games remaining, while the Red Storm have eight contests left. The two teams split the season series, winning four games each.
In game one, HPU trailed 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Blake Amaral singled in a run, reloading the bases. Kale Sumner then doubled down the left field line scoring two more. Chad Bolibol drove in the fourth run of the inning with a sacrifice fly. With Brent Queen on the mound that was enough offense for the win.
Queen got his fourth win of the season pitching nine innings while yielding just two runs on six hits with five strikeouts. Six different Sea Warriors collected hits.
Game two saw more stellar pitching as Ibanez pitched seven shutout innings, allowing two hits and striking out five. An RBI groundout from Amaral gave HPU the lead in the first inning. That would have been enough, but HPU added two more in the fourth when it put four hits together including RBI singles from Keanu Kapana and Wade Tamaru.
HPU next travels to Hilo to take on the Vulcans April 15-17, the first four games of the six game set will be league games.
