Honolulu, HI (September 16, 2011) – Both of the Hawai'i Pacific soccer teams notched wins over Notre Dame de Namur on Friday in Belmont, California. The ladies opened with a 2-0 win and the men followed with a 1-0 triumph.
The women's match was a 0-0 stalemate at the half, with both teams taking seven shots. HPU broke through in the 59th minute when
Andrea Aguirre scored her third goal of the season. Aguirre went high and over the goalkeeper on a pass from
Meghan Fuller to score the goal. Near the end of the match, at the 86:40 mark, Kaua Wall scored a goal to ice the match. Wall took an Argonaut turnover and scored inside the far post. Wall and Aguirre are now tied for the team lead with three goals apiece on the season.
Carianne Makino made six saves in the win; HPU is now 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the PacWest.
The men's team toppled the 19th ranked Argonauts with a goal late in the first half. Thirty-two seconds before the half,
Sam Carmichael sent a free kick towards the goal where it found the head of
Kainoa Kahui. Kahui's header inside the far post proved to be the game winner thanks to great defense.
NDNU outshot HPU 18-10 for the match, but
Mael Lefebvre was equal to the task stopping three shots. The win makes HPU 4-1 overall and 1-0 in conference.
“The guys played very gutsy soccer and were very determined to win. A great win to start conference play”, commented coach
Chris Fisher. “To get the goal right before halftime gave us momentum and confidence. The defense played very organized in the second half.”
Both teams will play Dominican University on Sunday in San Rafael, CA. The women's match starts at 2:00 PM PST and the men follow at 4:30 PM PST.
