Depleted Men's Soccer Fights to 2-2 Tie

Kaneohe, HI (October 28, 2012)- Alejandro Porras and Heimana Chene each scored a goal and Mael Lefebvre made four saves as the shorthanded Hawai'i Pacific (7-6-3, 6-3-3) men's soccer team battled to a 2-2 tie against Dominican University of California (8-7-1, 4-7-1).

Before the match even began there was a great deal of discussion amongst the Sea Warrior coaching staff as to how they were going to fill out the line-up card. On defense alone the Sea Warriors were down Captain Kainoa Kuhui, Jason Swihart and Marius Stensby, forcing head coach Chris Fisher to get creative with his lineup.

The Sea Warriors came hot out of the gate however, as Porras played a nice give-and-go with Jimmy Baggett in the 13th minute, tucking the ball just inside the right post for an early 1-0 lead. Just six minutes later the Sea Warriors would add to their lead as Porras sent a through ball to Chene who flicked the ball over the Penguins goalie who came out to challenge. Dominican would answer however in the 26th minute when Fabian Valdez headed in an indirect kick, cutting the lead to 2-1. The half would close with the Sea Warriors controlling much of the possession and dominating 11-2 on the shot counter.

Dominican would find the equalizer in the second half when Kolby Mitnick scored in the 62nd minute on a rebound after Lefebvre made the initial save. With the score tied at two, the remainder of the game would feature many near misses by the HPU offense. Kanoa Nartatez nearly broke the tie in the 82nd minute, but his shot was stopped by a diving Penguins keeper. Both Kimo Komomua and Porras narrowly missed goals in the closing minutes of regulation, Porras' with only 14 seconds remaining on the clock. Despite dominating the possession and shots in regulation, the Sea Warriors found themselves in another golden goal scenario.

Both overtime periods played much like the regulation as both teams had chances to score, but failed to finish. The match would close with the Sea Warriors enjoying a 24-11 advantage in shots and 5-2 in corner kicks, but tied on the scoreboard 2-2.

After the match head coach Chris Fisher discussed his team's injury issues and their effect on his team, “Although I'm not happy with the result, I am pleased with the performance from our players. We are depleted with injuries so our guys had to work extremely hard, many of them playing in unfamiliar positions.” Addressing the match specifically Fisher added, “This was a game we dominated and took a deserved early lead, but let them back into it with a couple mistakes. We have got to put these types of games away.”

The Sea Warriors return to the pitch at Atherton Field on November 1st when they host Academy of Art; game time is scheduled for 12:30.
