Azusa, CA (October 4, 2012) -
Alejandro Porras scored two goals in the first 16 minutes, but a devastating three minute span in the first half doomed the Hawai'i Pacific (4-4, 4-1) men's soccer team as it dropped its first PacWest game, to Azusa Pacific (6-3-1, 4-2), by the score of 4-3 in double overtime.
HPU took little time shaking off the long flight to the mainland as Porras scored his seventh goal of the season, just 1:06 in to the game, giving the Sea Warriors a 1-0 lead. It was Porras again finding the back of the net in 17th minute extending HPU's lead to 2-0. The Sea Warriors lead would not last long however, as Azusa Pacific scored goals two goals in the 24th minute and added another in the 26th to grab a 3-2 advantage. Azusa Pacific took the one goal lead to the half as HPU looked to regroup.
After the scoring barrage in the first half, the second half would largely be a defensive struggle. The half would remain scoreless until Sea Warrior forward
Heimana Chene notched the equalizer in the 75 minute to make the score 3-3. Regulation would end with the score tied at three and the teams prepared for the “golden goal” overtime.
While neither team managed much offense in the first overtime, Azusa Pacific would score in the second OT when Cougar forward Keenan Armbrust beat keeper
Mael Lefebvre for the game winner in the 107th minute. Lefebvre made five saves in the losing effort.
The loss breaks HPU's eight-game PacWest winning streak which dates back to October 19th 2011. Porras continues to shred PacWest opponents scoring in his fifth straight game giving him 23 points on the season, 19 of those coming in PacWest play.
In what was already a wild game with a goal in the 2nd minute of play and three more in three minutes in the first half, became even more bizarre as the action was suspended in the 83rd minute in order for fire and rescue personnel to land a helicopter on the field in order to fly out victims of a car wreck nearby. The last six minutes of regulation were played after the 15 minute delay.
The road trip continues for the Sea Warriors as they head down I-5 to San Diego to face off against Point Loma Nazarene University on October 6th; game time is scheduled for 11 AM.
