Women's Basketball Drops Opener in Oregon

Monmouth, OR (November 9, 2012) - Heidi Anton scored 15 points in her Sea Warrior debut and Mikela Thoemmes grabbed nine rebounds, but the Hawai'I Pacific (0-1) women's basketball team fell to host Western Oregon (1-0) in the first game of the Phoenix Inn DII Shootout, by the score of 73-61.

The Sea Warriors started strong in the first half, building a four-point lead after an Alli Gentry three-point shot pushed the score to 24-20 with three and a half minutes left in the first half. The Wolves would answer with a three of their own just 30 seconds later on their way to 13 unanswered points to close out the half. Down 33-24 the Sea Warriors went to the break looking to rebound.

In the second half HPU would put up fight in an attempt to come back. The Sea Warriors would take the advantage with points in the paint, 14-8, as well as second chance points, 17-6, but would find their comeback bid derailed by foul trouble, as four of the five starters hit the five foul limit. The Wolves would be awarded 45 foul shots for the game, 26 of them in the second half. The foul trouble and cold shooting proved too much to overcome and the Sea Warriors fell by the final score of 73-61.

The Sea Warriors return to the court on November 10 for the second game of the Phoenix Inn DII Shootout against St. Martin's University; game time is scheduled for 10 AM.
