Waipahu, HI (February 12, 2012) – After closing the 2011 season on a six game winning streak, the Hawai'i Pacific baseball team (4-0) has picked up where it left off. HPU has won the first four games of 2012, including a doubleheader sweep on Sunday over Hawaii-Hilo (0-4) at Hans L'Orange Park. HPU out slugged the Vulcans in the first game 9-8 and then took the second game 3-1.
Kale Sumner and
Wade Tamaru each had RBI hits in the first inning to give HPU the early lead in game one. Hilo responded with three runs of its own in the second inning to take the lead. The Sea Warriors added single runs in the fourth, fifth, and seventh innings to give HPU a 5-3 lead after seven innings. Hilo trimmed HPU's lead to 5-4 in the top of the eighth. HPU seemingly locked up the game with a four run bottom of the eighth, highlighted by a two run triple from
Blake Amaral. Down five runs, the Vulcans scored four in the ninth but couldn't complete the comeback.
HPU starter
John Albert got the win in his first action as a Sea Warrior.
Keanu Kapana picked up a two inning save in his first pitching action of his career.
The second game was controlled by HPU starter
Cory Yuh. After pitchers from both sides were shelled all weekend, Yuh gave up just one run on two hits in his complete game win. Yuh struck out four and walked just one.
After trailing 1-0, HPU tied the game in the third inning on a RBI single by
Justin Winters. HPU got two more runs in the fourth on RBI hits from Winters and
Russell Doi. That would be all that Yuh needed.
HPU returns to the diamond on Saturday for a doubleheader against Pacific University at Hans L'Orange Park at 2 PM.
