Las Vegas, NV (March 14, 2012) – Fresno Pacific University is scheduled to join the PacWest Conference next season, today the Hawai'i Pacific women's tennis team gave it a preview of life in the PacWest. Fifth ranked HPU beat second ranked (NAIA) FPU 7-2 in Las Vegas.
HPU (7-3) took two of the three doubles matches, including a 9-8 nail bitter at first doubles featuring
Vivian Hansen and
Magdalena Smejova.
Lea Kruse-Utermann and
Zora Vlckova continued their hot play with an 8-2 win.
The Sea Warriors won the first five singles matches, highlighted by
Ielyzaveta Rybakova's 6-0, 6-1 win at fifth singles. Smejova won her first set 6-0 and then her opponent retired due to injury. Ninth ranked Vlckova won convincingly at first singles, 6-2, 6-0 and
Celina Goetti had little issue at second singles winning 6-2, 6-3. Hansen again had a flair for the dramatic, going three sets and prevailing 10-3 in the tiebreaker.
HPU now returns home to host Illinois State University on Friday at 11 AM at the UH-Manoa Tennis Complex.
