Waipahu, HI (March 29, 2012) – The Hawai'i Pacific women's tennis team extended its record to 12-3 on the season after an 8-1 win over UH-Hilo. HPU took all four matches this season from the Vulcans by a combined score of 31-2.
The Sea Warriors overwhelmed UHH in doubles action, losing just one game total in the three matches. The first and second doubles teams of
Vivian Hansen/
Magdalena Smejova and
Ielyzaveta Rybakova/
Celina Goetti both produced unblemished 8-0 scores.
Lea Kruse-Utermann and
Zora Vlckova took an 8-1 victory at third doubles, their 11th victory on the year against no defeats.
Smejova played at first singles for the first time in her Sea Warriors career; she responded with a 6-1, 6-0 win. Ninth ranked Vlckova (pictured) won at second doubles, the Vulcans will be happy to see the senior graduate, Vlckova is 24-1 (combined singles and doubles) vs. UH-Hilo. Kruse-Utermann was pushed at third singles against UHH's Lindsey Shin, but prevailed in a tiebreaker. Shin is the sister of former HPU women's tennis player Lauren Shin. Hansen and Rybakova each posted perfect sets in wins at fourth and fifth singles.
HPU will face Division I UC Davis on Saturday at 11:00 AM at the University of Hawaii Tennis Complex.
Shark Bites: The new Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings are out and HPU remains ranked fifth in the nation…Vlckova dropped one spot to ninth in the country in singles since the last poll…Goetti is ranked 33rd after being 27th last month….the next poll is out on May 2nd.
