Manoa, HI (March 31, 2012) – The Hawai'i Pacific women's tennis team (12-4) fell 4-3 against a solid Division I team, UC Davis. The Sea Warriors and Aggies battled for over four hours on a warm day in Manoa.
HPU took early control after winning two of three doubles matches, as per Division I rules HPU got the doubles point.
Ielyzaveta Rybakova and
Celina Goetti played exceptionally at second doubles and won easily (8-3). The first doubles team of
Vivian Hansen and
Magdalena Smejova had a come from behind 8-6 victory.
HPU needed three singles victories for the win but only pulled off two. Both wins were three set epics, with all competitors pushed to the edge. Ninth ranked
Zora Vlckova beat UC Davis' Megan Heneghan 6-4, 4-6 and 1-0. Because the match was already decided, Vlckova won via a 10 point tiebreaker, but Rybakova's win went the full distance. The Ukraine native took the first set 6-3, dropped the second by the same score, and then won an exciting 7-6 third set.
HPU will host Utah State University on Thursday at 9 AM at the University of Hawaii Tennis Complex.
