Baseball Gets Last At-Bat Win in Split

Oakland, CA (April 24, 2012) – The Hawai'i Pacific baseball team (24-17, 16-15) scored a pair of runs in the 10th inning of game two to propel  the Sea Warriors to a 5-3 win over host Academy of Art (5-37, 5-27). HPU fell in the first game 9-7 despite a late comeback effort.

Game two was only scheduled for seven innings, yet after nine it was tied at three. With one out in the 10th, Kale Sumner doubled to right center field, he came around to score on Rylan Morihara's triple. Justin Winters then hit a sacrifice fly to plate Morihara.

Edward Trovato was masterful in relief; he pitched seven and two-thirds innings of shutout ball. HPU's usual closer allowed five hits and a walk, but struck out 10 Urban Knights. Starter Bryson Gauthe lasted only two and a third innings while giving up three runs.

HPU trailed 3-0 after three innings but got on the board in the fourth when Troy Ajer scored on a wild pitch. HPU tied the game in the sixth on a two RBI single from Winters.

In the early game, the Sea Warriors took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a two-run homer by Keanu Kapana. Academy of Art would tie the game in the bottom of the inning, but HPU came right back. In the fourth, San Francisco native Max Newman doubled home Jace Poole. Academy of Art roared back with five runs in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the fifth to lead 9-3.

Down to its last at-bat HPU made a furious comeback, Kapana doubled home Newman to make it a 9-4 game. After the second out, Kale Sumner launched a three-run home run to bring HPU back to within two.

Starter Cory Yuh was touched up for eight runs on 10 hits in four innings of work. Nolan Hoppie pitched four innings of relief and gave up just one run on four hits.

Kapana and Sumner did most of the damage on the day for HPU. Kapana had five hits, three runs, and four RBI in the doubleheader. Sumner had three hits, two runs and three RBI. Blake Amaral also had a three hit day.

HPU will now travel to Riverside, CA to take on #10 Cal Baptist for a four game set. The first doubleheader is on Friday at noon.
