Hilo, HI (April 6, 2012) – A strong start from
Michael Murray and 12 hits from the offense propelled the Hawai'i Pacific baseball team (19-12, 11-10) to a 6-1 victory over the University of Hawaii-Hilo (9-29, 6-23). The second game of the doubleheader was rained out.
Murray pitched eight innings and allowed just two hits and a run. That would be more than enough for the win as the offense score three times in the first inning alone.
Russell Doi picked up his 12th RBI of the season in the first to put HPU up 3-0 after the first two runs scored on an error. HPU would add a run in the fifth on a
Troy Ajer RBI to make it 4-0. In the sixth, it was
Jace Poole who drove in the Sea Warrior run. HPU would wrap up its scoring in the seventh,
Kale Sumner led off with a triple and then he scored on a sacrifice fly by Ajer. Hilo got on the board in the eighth, but the Sea Warriors closed out the 6-1 victory.
Poole, Ajer, and Doi each had two hits; Pooled did it in two at-bats.
Blake Amaral stole a pair of bases; he is now 3-4 on the season. Amaral didn't get a hit, but scored twice after reaching base both times as a hit batsman.
Nolan Hoppie pitched the scoreless ninth in relief of Murray.
The two teams will play a doubleheader in Hilo tomorrow at 11:00 AM.
