Box Score KANEOHE, HI (October 17, 2013)—The Hawai`i Pacific Men's Soccer Team (7-3-2, 5-1-1) worked a little late-game magic on Thursday to pick up a 2-1 victory over Dominican University (4-8-2, 2-5-1) in double overtime.
Â
The victory places the Sea Warriors in second place in the Pacific West Conference, just two points behind Fresno Pacific whom they defeated on Monday.
Â
The Penguins only took one shot in the first half, but the visitors made it count, taking a 1-0 lead just 14 minutes into the game.
Â
The Sea Warriors would spend the next 70-plus minutes peppering the Dominican goal, but struggled to find the game-tying strike.
Â
With just six minutes remaining in regulation, Sea Warrior forward
Felipe Silva took a feed from freshman
Erik Kemsies and ripped a shot just under the crossbar to knot the score at one.
Â
Head Coach
Chris Fisher commented on his team fighting back from the early deficit.
Â
"Dominican presented us with a serious challenge. They got the early goal and made it difficult to create scoring opportunities. Our guys continued to press and Felipe rescued us with an incredible strike. We were not going to be satisfied with a tie."
Â
With the score tied at 1-1 the match headed into overtime where HPU continued to press the action.
Â
Finally, in the 108
th minute, on its 23
rd shot of the match, Alejadro Porras sent a quick corner to the far post that found the head of
Jimmy Baggett who then sent a pass across the face of the goal to an open
Brais Garcia, who headed in the game-winner.
Â
The game-winner is Garcia's fifth on the season.
Â
After allowing the early goal, Sea Warrior goalkeeper
Mael Lefebvre made several key saves down the stretch. The senior finished with five for the match.
Â
Silva (10) and Garcia (9) remain ranked one and two respectively in the PacWest in goals scored.
Â
Kemsies has now recorded at least one point in six of the last seven matches.
Â
The Sea Warriors quest for the PacWest Championship continues on October 23
rd when they face UH Hilo at Atherton Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
