Box Score ELLENSBURG, WA (November 23, 2013) - The Hawai'i Pacific Men's Basketball Team (2-1) hung with ninth-ranked Seattle Pacific (6-1) for three quarters of the game but ultimately fell 73-57. The neutral site contest wrapped up the annual PacWest/GNAC Challenge.
The first half was a grinder; HPU led just twice but kept Seattle Pacific within arm's reach. Both leads came off the three-pointer, which was a big part of the HPU offense in the first half.
Justin Long dialed long distance with 17:01 left to give HPU its first lead. The Sea Warriors didn't regain the lead until the 2:06 mark when
John Horowitz connected from deep. Late in the half, SPU looked like it would take a two-point lead to the break, but
Colfax Nordquist got a steal and a layup to tie the game.
The first ten minutes of the second half was a see-saw affair with neither side able to lead by more than three points. With 10:47 left,
Malte Ziegenhagen hit a jumper to retie the game at 45. However, SPU then showed why it is nationally ranked when it hit three three-pointers on the next three possessions. The run would continue as SPU made it 61-48 with 5:43 left. HPU did not recover.
HPU hit six out of 10 three-pointers in the first half and held SPU to just two for 10. The tables were turned in the second half when SPU made 6 of 10 from three and HPU managed only 2 for 7.
Long was again big for the Sea Warriors with 18 points, including going 4-6 from three-point land. Ziegenhagen had 12 points to go with a team-high five rebounds.
Darry Jones Jr. added 10 points.
HPU will open PacWest play when UH Hilo visits the Neal Blaisdell Center on December 4th at 6:30 p.m.
