HONOLULU, HI (February 13, 2013) – The Hawai'i Pacific Men's Basketball team (9-11, 6-7) won its second consecutive game on Monday night at the Neal Blaisdell Center. HPU topped visiting California Baptist University (13-8, 7-6) by the score of 75-68. The win puts HPU back in the mix for a spot in the PacWest Conference Tournament.
The Sea Warriors did two things exceptionally well which propelled them to victory. First, HPU was relentless on the glass grabbing 18 more rebounds than the Lancers (36-18). HPU gave itself extra possessions on the offensive end with 14 offensive rebounds. Conversely, CBU grabbed its own misses just three times. Second, HPU made a living from beyond the arc. As has been the case most of the season, HPU shot for a high percentage. On this night the Sea Warriors connected on 10-21 three-pointers, good for nearly 48 percent.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair that saw three ties and four lead changes. With the Sea Warriors down a point in the waning minutes of the first half,
Max Livingston hit a three-pointer to give HPU a two point lead at 29-27 headed to the break.
The Sea Warriors came out of the locker room hot and extended the lead to 10 on a
Kawika Lyons jumper. The lead would eventually balloon to 17 points at 51-34. CBU wouldn't go away and mounted a comeback, but HPU handled the press to hold on for the 75-68 win.
Malte Ziegenhagen again led the scoring charge with 22 points, including four made three-pointers. The German national also passed out a team-high three assists.
Farbod Farman continued his exceptional play as of late with a double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds). Lyons (10 points) and
Jelany White (11 points) also reached double-figures for the Sea Warriors.
HPU will hold its senior night on Saturday night at Moanalua High School. The Sea Warriors will bid aloha to White,
Jeffery Neal and
Marko Cukic. The game will feature the Sea Warriors against Azusa Pacific starting at 5:00 PM.
