KONA, HI (February 16, 2013) – The Hawai'i Pacific Men's Tennis Team (1-0) entered the 2013 season as the fifth ranked team in the country, Saturday's 9-0 win over UH-Hilo (0-1) didn't do anything to dampen expectations.

The new look Sea Warriors had four players making their debut with HPU: Jaume Martinez-Vich, Max Hertl, Clemens Graute, and Maxime Halflants.

Hertl and Martinez-Vich teamed up at #3 doubles and won 8-2. Halflants joined Adriano Locorotondo and doubled up the competition, 8-4. Veteran Petr Michnev and Clemens Graute cruised to an 8-1 victory at first singles.

Singles play was a rout as UH-Hilo did not take a set. Eighth ranked Michnev won 6-1, 6-1 at first singles. Martinez-Vich was perfect in the second spot, winning 6-0, 6-0.

"Our guys played a very solid match today. They showed great attitude and stayed focused throughout the entire match. A win is always a good start to the season and I'm really looking forward to seeing them compete from here on out,” said HPU head coach Hendrik Bode.

HPU next takes on regional power UC-San Diego on Sunday in Kona at 10:00 AM. Bode knows thing will get tougher for his team, “We have a very tough schedule ahead of us. I think everyone understands that and is willing to put in the work to achieve the goals we've set for this team."
