Men’s Basketball Comes Up Short on Big Isle

HILO, HI (February 18, 2013)- For the second consecutive game cold shooting in the second half proved to be the demise of the Hawai'i Pacific (9-13, 6-9) Men's Basketball team as they fell to Hawaii-Hilo (6-17, 4-11) 78-62. Michael Pierce led the Sea Warriors with a team-high 14 points.

The Sea Warriors started the game strong leading throughout much of the first half. UHH would respond with a 14-4 run to take a seven point lead with 6:25 remaining in the half. The Vulcans would answer a Pierce three-pointer with one of their own as time expired in the half, leaving HPU with a one point deficit at the break.

HPU would shoot the ball well in the first half, hitting 52% (13-25) of its shots from the field including 36.4% (4-11) from beyond the arc. The Vuclans would also shoot it well in the half, hitting 52% (13-25) of their shots including 40% (4-10) from three-point range.

In the second half, the HPU shooters would go cold as the Vulcans went on a 14-1 run to open the half. By the 13:57 mark, HPU found itself down by 14 points. Jelany White found Pierce for one his four three-pointers, cutting the lead to nine with 7:58 to play, but HPU could not get any closer.

White finished the game with 11 points and seven assists while Max Livingston would add 11 points and five rebounds in the losing effort.

Despite the loss, HPU remains in control of the sixth seed for the PacWest tournament, with a half game lead over Academy of Art.

The HPU men now head to Phoenix to face Grand Canyon on February 23rd; tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 PM PST.
