Garcia Dominate, Baseball Sweeps PacWest Opener

Hilo, HI (February 28, 2013)- After opening with its first 10 games at home, the Hawai'i Pacific (9-3, 2-0) Baseball Team opened PacWest play on the road, sweeping UH-Hilo (3-9, 0-5) on the Big Island.  The Sea Warriors took game one 6-5 in 10 innings while earning a 2-0 shutout in game two.

The Sea Warriors struck early in game one, putting three runs on the board against the Vulcans in the first inning. HPU would follow back-to-back walks with back-to-back-to-back RBI singles before UHH forced a double play and a groundout to escape the inning.

Ace Michael Murray got the start the Sea Warriors, battling through six innings giving up five runs on six hits and three walks. Murray also hit two batters. While Murray struggled a bit with his control early, the Sea Warrior bullpen was strong in shutting down the Vulcans late in the game.

The HPU relievers combined to pitch 3 2/3 innings without giving up a single run on three hits. The Sea Warriors finally broke the tie in the top of the 10th inning.

Marvin Campbell opened the inning with a walk and Kale Sumner singled two batters later setting the stage for the red-hot Russell Doi. Doi would come through in the clutch, knocking in Campbell for his third RBI of the game breaking the extra-innings tie.

Pulama Silva entered the game to pitch the bottom of the tenth for HPU and shut down the Vulcans to earn the save. Reliever Nick Woodward picked up the victory for the Sea Warriors after allowing only one base runner through 1 2/3 innings.

Game two featured freshman Joshua Garcia pitching a gem in just his third collegiate appearance. Garcia tossed a complete game shutout, giving up just five hits and one walk while striking out five. Garcia allowed just two Vulcan base runners past first base the entire game for his first win.

Offensively it was Doi once again coming through for HPU, picking up his fourth RBI of the doubleheader in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly. The Sea Warriors added an insurance run in the fifth after Keanu Kapana scored on a wild pitch.

Doi kept up his torrid start, going 3-6 from the plate with four RBI in the double header. Campbell finished a combined 2-5 with three walks, three runs scored and an RBI.

The two teams double-dip again tomorrow in Hilo, this time in a non-conference series, at 12:00 PM.
