LAS VEGAS, NV (March 12, 2013) – A ranking of fifth in the nation doesn't leave the Women's Tennis Team (9-0) much room to pull of upsets. Yet it pulled off the second upset of the season on Tuesday with a 6-3 win over third ranked Abilene Christian (11-4).
HPU fell behind 2-1 after doubles action with the duo of
Ielyzaveta Rybakova and
Celina Goetti earning a shutout victory at third doubles.
The momentum shifted during singles play as five different Sea Warriors were victorious.
Carrie Shuler was brilliant in her 6-1, 6-1 win over a ranked opponent at second singles. The 39th ranked
Karen Ramirez triumphed at third singles as did
Vivian Hansen at fourth singles. Magdelena Smejova and
Lea Kruse-Utermann won by identical 6-0, 6-4 scores at fifth and sixth singles.
HPU now faces its toughest test of the season in top ranked Armstrong Atlantic tomorrow in Las Vegas.
