Men’s Tennis Sunk by Pirates

LAS VEGAS, NV (March 13, 2013) – The Hawai'i Pacific Men's Tennis Team (7-2) faced the top-ranked and defending NCAA Division II National Champion Armstrong Atlantic State (11-0) and lost 9-0. The final score didn't reflect how the Sea Warriors played.

Petr Michnev and Gerald Moretti played the top-ranked doubles team of Dan Regan and Georgi Rumenov and gave them a run, but fell 8-5. At third doubles, Max Hertl and Jaume Martinez-Vich were just edged 9-8 (1) to give Armstrong the 3-0 lead.

The Sea Warriors continued to battle in singles play. Michnev again matched up with Rumenov, who is also the nation's top ranked singles player. Michnev gave him all he could handle. HPU's captain won the first set 6-4, dropped the second set by the same score and then lost in the tiebreaker 11-9.

At fifth singles, Clemens Graute was opposite the 22nd ranked Pedro Scocuglia. Graute fell 6-1 in the opening set but bounced back with a 7-5 win to force a tiebreaker which Scocuglia won 10-3.

HPU now returns home to host Washington University in St. Louis at Central Oahu Regional Park on March 15th at 3:00 PM.
