HONOULU, HI (March 30, 2013) – The fifth ranked Hawai'i Pacific Men's Tennis Team (13-2) overwhelmed UH-Hilo 9-0 in a match played at Fort DeRussy. It was the final tune-up before the Sea Warriors head to Texas for a tough road trip.
The 10th ranked doubles team of
Petr Michnev and Gerald Moretti doubled up on the Vulcans at first doubles (8-4).
Clemens Graute and
Yann Renault were flawless at second doubles with the 8-0 win. At third doubles, the duo of
Max Hertl and
Jaume Martinez-Vich were untested, winning 8-3.
It was more of the same in singles play. Freshman Spanish sensation Martinez-Vich, who debuted at #12 in the nation in this week's rankings, dropped his opponent 6-0, 6-0 at first singles. Not to be outdone, Graute and
Maxime Halflants also were perfect at fifth and sixth singles. Renault just missed joining the club as he triumphed 6-1, 6-0 at fourth singles. Moretti and Hertl had the closest matches of the afternoon, both winning by identical 6-3, 6-2 scores.
The Sea Warriors now travel to Austin Texas for four matches in four days, with three of the opponents being ranked in the top 20. HPU will open with #13 Grand Canyon on April 4th.
