La Jolla, CA (March 8, 2013)- The Hawai'i Pacific Men's Tennis Team (5-0) opened up its mainland road trip with a statement, dispatching the 27th ranked team in the nation, UC San Diego (6-5) , 5-0.
The Sea Warriors would sweep doubles play, taking home a pair of 8-2 victories. The closest match of the afternoon came in the matchup featuring
Adriano Locorotondo and
Yann Renault who emerged victorious by a 9-8 score.
In singles play,
Max Hertl and
Clemens Graute defeated their opponents in straight sets, securing the victory for HPU. Graute won 6-1, 6-2 and Hertl cruised 6-3, 6-2 in his match. Due to bad weather, the other matches did not finish.
"The guys got off to a great start in doubles and did a great job focusing early with good energy. I give them a lot of credit for it, especially after a long rain delay and extremely cold weather for our standards. They all played well in singles as well and definitely put themselves in a good position for the upcoming matches on this trip. They all know what they're in for and I'm really looking forward to the next couple days," said head coach
Hendrik Bode.
The HPU men are back at it tomorrow, facing the number two team in country, the University of West Florida. The match is set to begin at 12:00 PM PST.
