La Jolla, CA (March 8, 2013) – For the second straight day the Hawai'i Pacific Women's Tennis Team (6-0) faced a nationally ranked opponent and again emerged victorious, defeating UC San Diego (7-4) 5-4.
The Sea Warriors began the match hot, sweeping the doubles action.
Vivian Hansen and
Magdalena Smejova took their match 9-7 at first doubles,
Lea Kruse-Utermann and
Karen Ramirez won 8-5 at second doubles while
Celina Goetti and
Ielyzaveta Rybakova cruised at third doubles (8-2).
The Tritons were able to get victories in second, third and fourth singles, but it was too late as Rybakova and Smejova would take their singles matches, sealing the victory for HPU. Rybakova won her match in straight sets while Smejova took hers in three.
"Today was much tougher than we thought it was going to be. UCSD is a good team and played well. We had a three hour rain delay and some pretty cold weather. Luckily, we were able to get the 5-1 win, before we lost the three 10-point tiebreak matches. It's disappointing to lose those, but UCSD played tough in the end," said head coach
Lauren Conching.
The win is the second vs. UCSD this season and could be key in the battle for the top team in the West Region.
The HPU women wrap up the San Diego portion of their road trip tomorrow facing their third nationally ranked opponent in as many days. Up next is 10th ranked University of West Florida. Matches are set to begin at 9:00 AM PST.
