WAIPIO, HI (April 18, 2013) – The Hawai'i Pacific Women's Tennis (17-1) team was untested in the opening round of the Pacific West Conference Women's Tennis Championship. The event, hosted by HPU at Central Oahu Regional Park (CORP), saw HPU blank Dominican 5-0 in the day's first women's match.
The win moves HPU into one semifinal where they will play the winner of Azusa Pacific vs. Fresno Pacific tomorrow at 10:30 AM at CORP.
The third-ranked Sea Warriors were dominant in doubles play. The team of
Lea Kruse-Utermann and
Karen Ramirez and the duo
Ielyzaveta Rybakova and
Celina Goetti where both unblemished with 8-0 wins.
Vivian Hansen and
Magdalena Smejova were near perfect with an 8-1 win at first doubles.
Only two singles matches were finished due to postseason protocol that says the match will be called when one team reaches five points. The bottom of the HPU lineup answered the call as Smejova and Kruse-Utermann each had 6-0, 6-0 victories. Three other Sea Warriors won their first set before the match was called.
