Waipahu, HI (April 6, 2013) – The Hawai'i Pacific Baseball Team (22-14, 13-11) took both ends of today's PacWest doubleheader against UH-Hilo (8-30-1, 7-25-1). The Sea Warriors used good pitching to win 5-1 in game one and 5-2 in the nightcap.
Joshua “Rico” Garcia was the story in game one of the doubleheader. Garcia worked in and out of trouble all game long, but made big pitch after big pitch. He gave up nine hits during his complete game win. The only run he allowed was a leadoff homerun in the ninth inning while holding a 5-0 lead.
HPU batted around in the third inning while scoring three runs.
Kale Sumner had the big two RBI hit.
Codey Ellenwood had an RBI single in 5th inning and
Marvin Campbell had an RBI triple in the 6th to give HPU a 5-0 lead two-thirds of the way into the game. Neither club would score until the 9th inning home run.
Sumner and
Russell Doi each had two hits in game one.
The Vulcans came out with renewed energy in game two and got single runs in each of the first two innings to lead 2-0.
HPU got one of the runs back in the 3rd inning,
Tyler Tokunaga doubled in
Jordan Inamasu who scored all the way from first base.
In the fifth inning, what appeared to be a setback actually was the turning point of the game that propelled HPU to victory. Doi was called out on strikes to open the inning; he protested the call and was ejected from the game. That sparked a dormant HPU bench and rallied the crowd. The next five Sea Warriors would reach base as HPU scored four times to take control.
Michael Murray was outstanding for HPU. He gave up just one hit in six innings of work while allowing two runs (one earned). The senior struck out six and walked just two. Tre Haliburton-Goeas came on for the seventh inning and he earned his first career save.
Tokunaga went 3-3 with an RBI and run scored to lead HPU.
The teams will play a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday at Hans L'Orange Park at 12:00 PM.
