SURPRISE, AZ (May 10, 2013)- The Hawai'i Pacific Women's Team lost 5-2 to powerhouse Armstrong Atlantic State in the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis National Semifinal. The match was hotly contested, particularity in singles play, and was closer than the final score may indicate.
The Sea Warriors jumped out to an early lead when the doubles team of
Celina Goetti and
Ielyzaveta Rybakova won the first match of the day, an 8-1 cakewalk at third doubles. Unfortunately, for the HPU faithful, the Sea Warriors were dumped at first and second doubles to give AASU a 2-1 lead after doubles play.
The Pirates made it a 3-1 contest after a win at first singles, but HPU responded as
Magdalena Smejova knocked off #27 Olga Kalodzitsa 6-3, 6-3. AASU moved to the brink after a win at fourth singles and then sealed the match at sixth singles. However, there was a bit of controversy.
Lea Kruse-Utermann called match point, but was overruled by the chair umpire.
The Sea Warrior just missed potential wins at second and third singles. Both Goetti and
Karen Ramirez won a set and led in the third set when play was stopped.
