KANEOHE, HI (September 21, 2013) – The Hawai'i Pacific Men's Soccer Team (2-2-1) fell 4-2 to visiting BYU-Hawaii (2-1-1) in a wild affair at Atherton Field on Saturday. The game featured six goals, two ties, three lead changes, seven yellow cards and one red card.
BYUH got on the board first in the 24th minute after a Sea Warrior defender misplayed a ball leaving the keeper helpless in a one-on-one situation. Undeterred, HPU answered just three minutes later when
Felipe Silva scored after picking up a loose ball played in by
Truls Henrik Lystad.
Less than five minutes later, BYUH would score again on a break away when a moonshot pass from the BYUH defensive half of the field found the foot of a Seasider forward on a run. Only 53 second later, HPU again answered quickly when
Marius Stensby found Silva who deposited a left footer past the keeper for his second goal in six minutes, tying the score at 2-2.
BYUH would get on the board first in the second half, with a goal in the 69th minute to take the 3-2 lead. The Seasiders added to their lead just four minutes later on a free kick to take a 4-2 lead.
Over the next minute, the two sides would combine for four yellow cards between them, culminating with HPU being shown a red card for rough play.
Despite the two-goal deficit, and being down a man, it was HPU that saw the better chances on goal in the remaining 17 minutes.
After being tackled in the box, senior forward
Alejandro Porras pushed a penalty shot in the 79th minute just wide. Silva challenged the Seasider keeper in the waning seconds as well, but failed to find the back of the net.
The Sea Warriors finished the match with a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks and
Mael Lefebvre finished with six saves in net.
With the two-goal performance, Silva now leads the Pacific West Conference in goals scored per game.
With the non-conference portion of the schedule completed, the Sea Warriors now hit the road for PacWest play, starting in St. George, UT against Dixie State on September 28th. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
