Volleyball Hits for High Percentage, Wins

Box Score HONOLULU, HI (September 7, 2013) – The Hawai'i Pacific Volleyball Team (4-0) continued its hot start to the season with a sweep of visiting Fort Hayes State (0-4). HPU's hitting efficiency (.396) coupled with nine blocks spelled a short night for the Tigers (25-19, 25-13, 25-19).

The first set was a see-saw affair with neither team establishing itself early. HPU trailed the match 14-13 before the Sea Warriors exploded on a 10-1 run to essentially win the set. The burst featured two kills apiece from Samantha Rummans, Pomai Recca, and Christina Furrer.

HPU turned on the afterburners in the second set after losing the second set the last two nights. Incredibly, Fort Hayes State took a 2-0 lead before the Sea Warriors unleashed a 19-4 run. HPU was downright stingy on defense holding the visitors to a -.067 hitting percentage in the second set.

The third set mirrored the first set, neither team got separation in the opening stages. HPU again fell behind at 12-11, but reeled off nine of the next 10 points. Kasey Thompson keyed the onslaught with a pair of kills in the run. Haley Doerfler sent the fans to the exits with a no doubt kill to ice the match.

Recca again led the offense with 12 kills while hitting .375. Through four games, the freshman is fifth in the PacWest in hitting percentage (.389) and third in kills per set (4.07).

Rummans was also spectacular on the outside; she racked up eight kills as she hit .571. Thompson was stellar too with eight kills (.389) as was Culpepper (7 kills, .545).

"We were very focused tonight as a group and both Sam and Elizabeth had their first breakout games of the season," said HPU Head Coach Daryl Kapis.

Hannah Schuett led the team in assists with 25; Marie Fujii wasn't far behind with 16.

Chelsey Buyuan spearheaded the defensive effort with 19 digs, Fujii added eight. Doerfler was dominant at the net with three total blocks.

HPU will next travel to Sonoma State for the four-match SeaWolf Spike tournament. HPU will open with San Francisco State on September 13th at 1:30 p.m. PST.

"We are already focused on our next opponent, San Francisco State, who was in the NCAA tournament last year and won the Otter Classic at Monterey Bay this weekend," said Kapis.

Kapis is in search of his 100th win as HPU head coach against SF State, ironically his alma mater.
