Box Score SAN RAFAEL, CA (October 23, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Men's Soccer Team (7-7-1, 5-4) lost its game against Dominican University of California (1-12-1, 1-7) 2-1 on Thursday afternoon.
Both teams started aggressive in a physically hard fight in California. HPU managed to create chances and already had several good shots in the first minutes of the game.
In the 21st minute,
Kona Gaison tried his luck with a good shot, but the ball was saved by the DUC goalie. Generally, the Sharks had more chances and shots, but struggled to put the ball in the goal.
Thirty-two minutes in the game, a DUC player got the ball inside the box after a good cross from the right side, eluded a defender and the goalkeeper, and grabbed the lead for the Penguins.
Just three minutes later (35') the Penguins struck again. A good pass through the defense found an open player in the middle of the box who made it 2-0 with a low shot into the left corner.
The Sharks started hot in the second period with a good shot from
William Komomua that was blocked by the defense (49'). The Sharks were the team making the plays, but still struggled with putting the ball into the net. Despite earning a 10-2 advantage in shots in the second period, HPU's effort stayed unrewarded until late in the game.
In the 85th minute,
Christopher Galang got the ball after a scramble in front of the goal and fired the ball over the goalie and into the net. Following, HPU played aggressive and outgoing but it was too late to tie the game.
"Defensively, we are not disciplined to start the game. It takes a deficit to get us started and we are struggling to put the ball in the net. It is a recipe for disaster," said Head Coach
Chris Fisher after the game.
Despite the loss, the Sharks significantly led the statistics in shots (19-6) and shots on goal (7-5).
Erik Kemsies led the Sharks with six shots,
Brais Garcia had four. The physically hard play resulted in a total of 39 fouls (DCU 21-18) and eight yellow cards (4-4).  Sharks' keeper
Alexander Berntsen finished the game with three saves.
HPU will play one more game on the mainland against Fresno Pacific University, on October 25th, before traveling back to Hawai'i.
