HOLUA, HI (February 16, 2014) – The fourth-ranked Hawai'i Pacific Women's Tennis Team (4-0) earned a 7-2 win over #17 UC San Diego (3-4) in a match played on the west side of the Big Island.
 
The top two Sea Warrior doubles teams of Vivian Hansen/Lea Kruse-Utermann and Karen Ramirez/Celina Goetti faced little resistance in 8-2 and 8-3 wins. HPU swept the doubles competition after Lorena Gheorghe and Magdalena Smejova battled to a 9-8 win at third doubles.
 
Newcomer Gheorghe gave HPU a 4-0 lead by winning 6-2, 6-2 at fourth singles. Smejova then clinched the match with a dominating 6-1, 6-0 performance. Hansen and Ramirez looked just as good in convincing victories. Kruse-Utermann seemed to be cruising after winning the first set 6-2, but she retired due to injury while up 5-4 in the second.     
 
The two teams could meet again in the NCAA West Regional as HPU came in ranked 2nd in the West with UCSD at 4th.

The Sea Warriors and Tritons do have a rematch in the regular season in La Jolla, CA on March 15th.   

HPU will play UH-Hilo in Holua tomorrow at 9:00 a.m.
