Box Score 2 FRESNO, HI (February 22, 2014)—The Hawai`i Pacific Baseball Team (6-1, 1-1) started conference play by splitting a doubleheader with Fresno Pacific (6-5, 1-1). The Sea Warriors took game one 2-1, but dropped the nightcap 5-4.
Game one was a low scoring affair as neither ace gave up a run until HPU broke through in the fourth.
Samuel Goold kicked off the inning with a double to right field.
Kevin Lenik moved Goold to third with a single.
Chad Bolibol bounced into a double play in the ensuing at-bat, but the run scored giving the Sea Warriors a 1-0 advantage.
FPU tied the score at one with a run in the bottom of the fifth off HPU starter Joshua Garcia, but that would be all Garcia and reliever
Jeremy Fujimoto would allow.
The score remained tied until the ninth inning. Lenik opened the top half with a single through the left side and Bolibol moved him to second with a sacrifice bunt. Lenik moved to third on
Codey Ellenwood's single and eventually scored on a
Keanu Kapana single.
With a one-run lead Tre Haliburton-Goeas came on to work a perfect ninth to get the save as well as give HPU its first PacWest victory.
Garcia spread six hits over 6 2/3 innings while allowing just one run, but it was Fujimoto who got the victory in relief after allowing just one base runner in 1 1/3 innings.
Things looked good early for the Sea Warriors in game two as Lenik had a two-run double and Kapana had another RBI single to give HPU a 3-0 lead.
The Sunbirds worked their way back to tie the score with a run in the fourth and two in the sixth. With neither side able to score in the game went to extra innings.
After a scoreless eighth, HPU put a run on the board when Bolibol singled to open the inning and eventually scored on a squeeze play by Ellenwood. The one-run lead would not hold however, as a pair of unearned runs crossed the plate to give FPU the 5-4 victory.
The two teams will face off again with a doubleheader on Monday.
