Garcia Overwhelming on Mound for Baseball Squad

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HAYWARD, CA (March 1, 2014) - The Hawai`i Pacific Baseball Team (9-3) split the final two games of its road trip against Cal State East Bay (8-7). The Sea Warriors took game one 6-1 in 10 innings, but dropped game two 1-0.

Game one was a pitcher's duel as HPU ace Joshua "Rico" Garcia shut down the Pioneers, allowing just one run on five hits in eight innings of work.

The Pioneers scored a run to open scoring in the second inning, but the Sea Warriors answered with a run of their own in the seventh inning on a Samuel Goold RBI single.

The Sea Warriors threatened with runners on base in the eighth and ninth innings, but the score remained tied after nine and went to extra innings.

Codey Ellenwood led off the 10th inning with a single and moved to second on a throwing error. Mitchell Bumann came on to pinch-run for Ellenwood and then James Carraway followed with a walk. Both advanced on a passed ball before Ryan Torres-Torioka knocked in Bumann for what would eventually be the game-winning run.

HPU batted around while adding four more runs in the 10th before Doug Christie finished the game with his second scoreless inning to pick up the win.

Game two was low scoring affair with both teams only combining for six hits.

The Pioneers managed a run in the opening inning off HPU starter Luke Laurita, but the freshman settled down to allow just three hits over five innings.

The Sea Warriors threatened with base runners in each of the final three innings, but struggled to find the game-tying score, dropping game two 1-0.

Senior Keanu Kapana continued to swing a hot bat going 3-6 with an RBI and a run scored. Jordan Oshiro went 4-6 on the day with an RBI and a run scored. He continues to befuddle pitchers and catchers on the base paths as he swiped four more stolen bases.

The Sea Warriors return to Oahu for an eight-game home stand beginning with California Baptist on March 10th. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Hans  L'Orange Park.
