ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL (May 14, 2014) - The Hawai'i Pacific Men's Tennis Team (21-0) had to work into the wee hours of the morning but it came away with a 5-0 win over Columbus State (20-4) to move onto the Elite Eight at the NCAA Division II National Championships.
The match, which was delayed by poor weather, didn't finish until after 1:15 a.m. local time. All of the waiting around didn't effect the Sea Warriors as they took all three doubles matches to take a commanding lead. The nation's top ranked doubles team of
Petr Michnev and
Thibaud Berland dropped the #5 team 8-6 to get HPU on the board. The fifteenth ranked team of
Jaume Martinez-Vich and
Mattis Wetzel kept their perfect season going with an 8-3 win at second doubles.
Yann Renault and
Adriano Locorotondo needed a tiebreaker but prevailed 7-1 to give HPU the 3-0 lead.
Berland (#35) continued his stellar play by edging his opponent 7-5 in the first set and then erasing all doubt in the second set (6-1). Wetzel then sent the team to bed, and onto the next round, with a similar performance (7-5, 6-3).
Â
HPU will play either Bluefield State or Southwest Baptist tomorrow in the Elite Eight at 1:00 p.m. in Altamonte Springs.
