ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL (May 16, 2014) – The fifth-ranked Hawai'i Pacific Women's Tennis Team's (20-7) season came to a close on Friday morning in the NCAA Division II national semifinal. HPU lost to top ranked Barry University 5-1, but the match was played closer than the final may indicate.
Barry started off doubles play with a win at second doubles, but the Sea Warriors matched with an 8-4 win by
Vivian Hansen and
Lea Kruse-Utermann at third doubles.
Karen Ramirez and
Celina Goetti battled at first doubles, fighting off break point and game point time and time again, but in the end lost to the #6 team in the nation.
Barry, a national powerhouse every year, kept it rolling in singles play. Sea Warrior losses at first, fifth and second singles ended the match. Kruse-Utermann, who has had a great national tournament, won a set before her match was stopped.
This was HPU's third appearance in the national semifinals in the last five seasons (2010, 2013, 2014).
