Baseball Uses Longball in Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HILO, HI (May 2, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Baseball Team (27-21, 19-12) split today's final PacWest doubleheader of the year at UH Hilo (12-31, 10-22). HPU dominated the Vulcans in game one by a 10-1 count, but fell 7-4 in the nightcap.

In game one, HPU had its way to the tune of a 10-1 blowout win. However, it was UH Hilo that struck first with a single tally in the third inning.

The Sea Warriors took the lead for good in the fourth inning when they plated two runs on two base hits and two miscues defensively from the home team. HPU tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning thanks in part to an RBI single from Kevin Lenik and an RBI double from Derek Nakasato.

HPU blew the game wide open with four runs in the sixth inning. Jordan Oshiro started the scoring in the frame with an RBI single. Lenik then pounded a three-run homer to left center field, his seventh of the campaign.

Ryan Torres-Torioka added a two-run bomb of his own in the seven inning to close the scoring for the game. It was the second baseman's first long ball of his collegiate career.

Rico Garcia (4-1) was overwhelming on the mound for HPU, he scattered five hits while striking out eight Vulcans over nine innings to pick up the win.

Game two saw HPU jump on top 1-0 in the first inning, scoring on a wild pitch. However, the lead was short lived as the Vulcans scored twice in the bottom of the inning. The score then became 3-1 after UHH added a single run in the second inning.

HPU came roaring back with three runs in the third inning to retake the lead. Anu Kapana and Codey Ellenwood provided the Sea Warriors with RBI hits and Chad Bolibol coaxed a bases loaded walk to score the third run.

The HPU bats then went silent as the home team posted three runs in the fourth inning and another in the sixth to get the win.

The two teams will play another doubleheader tomorrow in Hilo at 3:00 p.m.
