Men’s Soccer Ties in Colorado

Box Score COLORADO SPRINGS, CO (September 5, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Men's Soccer (2-0-1) team tied 1-1 against University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (0-0-1) in its first road game on the mainland.

The Sharks started well in a balanced first half of the match. In the sixth minute, midfielder Erik Kemsies recorded the first shot on the goal, testing the UCCS goalie. The first half presented a close match between HPU and UCCS. Both teams played well and managed to create chances. The Sharks and the Mountain Lions had four shots each during the first 45 minutes.

Just minutes after the changeover (48'), HPU's goal getter Brais Garcia picked up where he left off in Hawai'i and scored his third goal of the season to give HPU the lead. Freshman Christopher Galang, off to a great start in his Sharks career, facilitated the goal with the pass to Garcia.

HPU's lead did not last long, however, as UCCS managed to tie the score at 1-1 just 30 seconds later.

In the 51st minute, Kona Gaison nearly seized the lead by heading the ball just over the post after a corner kick from Kemsies.

In the following course of the match, both teams had its chances, but neither managed to score. Garcia almost gave HPU the win with 30 seconds to play, but the shot hit the crossbar.

The two overtime periods saw zero shots on goal between the two teams.

"Our boys fought hard today, UCCS is a tough team. We came in here after the long travel and played a good game. We had chances to win and with time we will finish those chances. I am proud of my team," said HPU Head Coach Chris Fisher. "Defensively we were strong again, limiting them to a few chances."

The Sharks won the statistical battle, leading in shots (13-9) and shots on target (7-4). Kemsies and Garcia took three shots each while Gaison and Daniel Haehre both fired two shots.

HPU goalie Eduardo Palacio had three saves in the first tie of his young career.

The Sharks will play their next game on Sunday at Metropolitan State University of Denver before they head back to open the home season in Kaneohe next weekend.
