Box Score KANEOHE, HI (September 7, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Women's Soccer Team (1-0) started off the season with a 2-1 win over Florida Institute of Technology (1-1) at Atherton Field.
The Sharks had a great start to the game, taking three shots within the first six minutes. In minute seven,
Lexi Cameau won the ball in the midfield and fired from just inside the box, scoring the season's first goal for the Sharks.
Just minutes later, keeper
Kelby Boswell, who finished with five saves, prevented the tie with a good save after a powerful shot from the FIT offense.
In the following course, aggressive playing HPU managed to create space in the midfield and to play active over the wings. Senior
Ashlyn Ubongen was able to break away from the opposing player and had to be stopped with a foul, resulting in a penalty kick in the 19th minute. Ubongen took over responsibility by herself and converted the penalty kick, bringing a two-goal lead to the Sharks.
"We tried to play aggressive and to apply what we worked on. It was a good team win and we had a lot of presence on the field," said Ubongen after the game.
After the changeover, FIT, who beat BYU-Hawaii yesterday, managed to make it 2-1 (52') after a tumult in the box following a high cross.
The Sharks, however, stayed calm and HPU's defensive wall kept the goal clean, resulting in a 2-1 win.
HPU led in the statistics as well, leading shots 20-14. Twelve of HPU's shots were on goal whereas just seven of FIT's shots were on the target.
Head Coach
Gina Brewer was pleased after the game, "The girls played tough and physical which was part of our plan. We got an early goal, but we stayed hungry to put another away in the first half. I am proud of the team and the result and I am looking forward to the next game."
HPU next plays on Thursday in Kaneohe against Western Oregon University at 3:00 p.m.
