KONA, HI (February 15, 2015) – The sixth ranked Hawai'i Pacific Women's Tennis Team (4-0) took both ends of Sunday's tennis doubleheader. HPU opened with a 9-0 win against UH-Hilo and then grinded out a 6-3 win over UC San Diego (3-4).
It was total domination for the Sharks against UH Hilo. In doubles action, HPU lost a combined three games, including a perfect 8-0 win at third doubles from Vivian Hansen and Sofia Tavitian.
Singles play was similar, Lorena Gheorghe blanked her opponent 6-0, 6-0 at fourth singles. Tavitian completed the dream match with a 6-0, 6-0 win; on the day she went a combined 20-0 vs. Hilo.
Perennial west region contender UC San Diego posed a bigger challenge in the second match of the day. The doubles team of Gheorghe and Kristyna Hancarova pulled an upset at the top of the lineup, beating the #14 ranked team in the country 8-4. Lea Kruse-Utermann and Nicole Hoynaski also won at second doubles (8-3) to give HPU the advantage heading into singles play.
The bottom part of the HPU singles lineup won the match for HPU. Gheorghe was masterful at fourth singles, winning 6-0, 6-1. Kruse-Utermann and Tavitian both earned straight set wins at the fifth and six positions to seal the win. Hoynaski also looked good, winning 6-4, 6-0 at second singles.
The Sharks return home to host Chaminade on February 19th at 10:00 am at Central Oahu Regional Park.
