HONOLULU, HI (February 23, 2015) – The madness of March starts early for both Hawai'i Pacific Basketball teams, each have key games tomorrow against Dominican University of California at the Neal Blaisdell Center at 4:30 pm and 6:30 pm. The men's team is in a must-win situation as they fight for a spot in the PacWest Tournament. On the women's side, HPU can clinch the top seed in the women's bracket with a win.
After 18 PacWest games, the top five spots in the Men's Basketball PacWest Tournament are set. The sixth, and final, spot is still up for grabs between HPU and Dominican. A Dominican (12-13, 9-8) win clinches the sixth seed for the Penguins. An HPU (14-10, 9-9) win on Tuesday and a win on Saturday (or a future Dominican loss) would send the Sharks to Irvine.
It promises to be a fun night at the Blasidell with a Pepsi promotion, hot dogs from the campus activity board, a staff vs. faculty game at half, and lots of high level Division II basketball.
The women's basketball team (21-4, 16-2) can clinch the top overall seed in the PacWest Tournament for the second time in three seasons with a victory. Maybe more importantly, the Sharks need a win to maintain, or possibly improve, their ranking in the West Region. HPU is currently ranked sixth in the West Region and would need to stay in the top eight for an at-large bid to the NCAA playoffs. Dominican (12-11, 9-8) won't be a pushover, the Lady Penguins trail BYU-Hawai'i by a half game for the final spot in the tournament. Â
Fans should keep their eyes in the post as all-everything
Morganne Comstock matches up with Dominican's Sarah Nelson. Comstock, who stands 6'2, leads the PacWest in points (20.1) and is tied for second in rebounds (11) per game. At a massive 6'4, Nelson also averages 11 rebounds to go with 5.4 blocks per game, which leads the nation. Nelson twice notched triple-doubles this year with points, rebounds and blocks.
The women's contest is also Breast Cancer Awareness night, in conjunction with Queen's Medical Center and the HPU Nursing Program. Please wear pink clothing to support this worthy cause.
The women's game tips at 4:30 pm with the men starting around 6:30 pm.
