HONOLULU, HI (March 12, 2015) – The Hawai'i Pacific Men's Tennis Team (8-0) started its difficult road trip off on the right note with a 9-0 win over Point Loma (6-7). The win will help keep HPU on top in the West Region as Loma entered the match ranked fifth in the region and 42nd nationally.
Although HPU swept doubles play, Point Loma was no pushover. The teams of
Thibaud Berland/
Marko Lenz and
Jakub Hadrava/
Jaume Martinez-Vich each pulled out 8-5 wins.
Maik Burlage and
Yann Renault where pushed to a tie break, but made the plays in the end to win 9-8.
HPU did not lose a set in singles play, the "closest" match was Lenz's 6-3, 6-3 win at first singles. Berland and Martinez-Vich each posted identical 6-1, 6-2 triumphs. Hadrava kept his strong rookie season going with a 6-3, 6-2 win in the fourth position. The Sharks showed off their depth as
Clemens Graute (6-0, 6-2) and Renault (6-0, 6-0) completely manhandled their opponents at fifth and sixth singles.
The road gets tougher from here as the Sharks have a rematch of last year's national championship final tomorrow (3/13). Top ranked West Florida and the second ranked Sharks will do battle on a neutral court in San Diego.
