LA JOLLA, CA (March 13, 2015) – The Hawai'i Pacific Women's Tennis Team (10-2) proved the rankings to be correct as #6 HPU bested #7 West Florida (7-2) 6-3 on a neutral court in Southern California.
HPU quickly ended any drama by winning all three doubles matches to take a commanding 3-0 lead, although it wasn't easy. The teams of Lorena Gheorghe/Lea Kruse-Utermann and Vivian Hansen/Julia Sauer each gutted out 8-5 wins at second and third doubles. Kristyna Hancarova and Nicole Hoynaski made a case to be ranked by dropping the #10 duo in the nation, 8-6.
Hancarova kept it rolling into singles and made a statement with a straight set (7-5, 6-0) victory over the fourth ranked player in Division II. The HPU newcomer is a virtual lock to receive a ranking when the new rankings are released on March 25th. Gheorghe then clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-3 win at fourth singles. For good measure, Kruse-Utermann was also a winner, winning a tie break (10-4) in the third set.
HPU is back in action tomorrow as it visits #15 UC San Diego.
