LA, JOLLA, CA (March 14, 2015) – The Hawai'i Pacific Women's Tennis Team (12-2) played a doubleheader with #15 UC San Diego and #23 Cal State LA on Saturday in Southern California. The Sharks went almost unblemished on the day beating UCSD 5-1 and then CSULA 9-0.
It was an early day for the Sharks as the first serve vs. UCSD was at 9:30 am. Due to the doubleheader, the teams agreed to stop the match once a winner was determined.
The Sharks quickly jumped on the home team by winning all three doubles matches. The duo of
Kristyna Hancarova and
Nicole Hoynaski added another impressive line to their resume with an 8-4 win against the 14th ranked doubles team.
Lorena Gheorghe and
Lea Kruse-Utermann won at second doubles by the exact same count. The team of
Vivian Hansen and
Julia Sauer completed the trifecta with a 9-7 win.
Needing just two matches for the victory, Kruse-Utermann was dominant in a 6-0, 6-2 win at fourth singles. Sauer had little trouble at sixth singles, winning 6-3, 6-3.
HPU returned to the court at 2:30 pm and showed no ill effects from already having played a match.
The doubles play was strong again for HPU. Hancarova/Hoynaski and Hansen/Sauer each earned 8-3 wins; Gheorghe/Kruse-Utermann weren't far behind with an 8-4 victory.
Gheorghe (6-1, 6-1), Hoynaski (6-2, 6-1), and Hancarova (6-2, 6-3) were in complete control to give HPU a 6-0 lead. Kruse-Utermann also won in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5. HPU got the shutout when Hansen grinded out the tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets (6-3, 3-6).
HPU returns to the court on Monday (March 16th) when it visits #22 Point Loma.
