SAN DIEGO, CA (March 17, 2015) – The sixth-ranked Hawai'i Pacific Women's Tennis Team (14-2) stayed undefeated against Division II teams with a hard fought 6-3 victory over #17 Azusa Pacific (7-6).
The key to the match was doubles play as the teams split singles down the middle. The second doubles team of
Lorena Gheorghe and
Lea Kruse-Utermann opened up the scoring with an 8-4 win. The team of
Vivian Hansen and
Julia Sauer edged their opponents 9-7 while
Kristyna Hancarova and
Nicole Hoynaski needed the tiebreak to seal the 9-8 win.
After sitting out singles yesterday, Hancarova returned to the top lineup with a vengeance. The Czech Republic native thrashed the #28 singles player in DII, 6-2, 6-0. Kruse-Utermann clinched the win with a 6-3, 6-1 performance at fifth singles. The PacWest Player of the Week, Gheorghe, continued her strong play with a three-set win (6-2, 5-7, (8)).
The Sharks look to complete the perfect road trip tomorrow (March 18th) when they battle top-ranked Armstrong State on a neutral court.
