Box Score 2 WAIPAHU, HI (April 12, 2015) – The Hawai'i Pacific Baseball Team (18-19) concluded the series on Sunday with UH-Hilo (7-30) and split the doubleheader. The host Sharks took 5-6 games from the Vulcans and now sit just one game under .500 on the season. HPU lost the opener 5-4 but dominated game two 14-2.
Game one was a tug of war type struggle between the two teams as neither side was able to pull away with a definitive lead.
UH Hilo managed to score three runs in the first three innings and held on to that lead until the fifth.
In the fifth, the Sharks tied the game with three runs, one on a
James Carraway infield single and two on a
Ryan Torres-Torioka single down the right field line.
The Vulcans retook the lead in the seventh and then again lost the lead in the eighth when
Tyler Tokunaga singled up the middle for an RBI.
In the ninth, Hilo scratched one more run across and was able to hold down the Sharks for the win, breaking a 14-game losing streak.
Tokunaga was the offensive highlight for the Sharks going 3-4 at the dish with an RBI and a stolen base.
Starter
Nick Camarena came up with a quality performance for the Sharks. He threw six and two-thirds innings allowing four runs and had seven strikeouts, but got a no decision in the outing.
In game two, HPU's offense came back to life as the Sharks put an exclamation point on the series.
In the second inning, the Sharks jumped out to a two-run lead with RBI from
Steven Camberos and
Reid Akau.
Hilo retaliated with two of its own in the top of the third to tie the game. The Sharks responded in the bottom half with two more runs being driven in by Carraway and Torres-Torioka to make it 4-2.
The Sharks extended that lead in the fourth when
Chad Bolibol hit a first pitch three-run homerun deep over the center field wall and into the Sharks' bullpen.
In the fifth, the Sharks put the game out of reach scoring five runs, making the score 12-2.
The sixth inning saw more Shark runs, when Tokunaga tripled home two more runs for insurance.
Starter
Jordan Deponte (3-1) earned the win going five innings with three strikeouts and allowing just the two runs on three hits.
Tokunaga and Bolibol both had three RBI games to lead the offense for the Sharks.
Carraway had a career series going 11-15 at the plate with seven RBI, six runs scored, two doubles, and one triple. The senior raised his batting average from .238 at the beginning of the series to .306.
The Sharks go onto play the Vulcans on the Big Island next weekend with the first of three doubleheaders on Friday.
